13 Words I Wish I Knew Before I Started My Blog

"When I First Researched How To Make Money Online, I Didn't Know Where To Start"

It’s time for the weekend again! Don’t we need a day between Saturday and Sunday? I think we do, I mean there’s a five day week and a two day weekend. Who made that up?
If you’ve been reading my blog you know that I am on an online journey, freelancing myself to financial freedom. I can’t sing or dance or draw so this is my only way out 🙂
As I learn new things, and trust me there is always something new. I try my best to compile all of my insane notes and make a blog post that would be beneficial to somebody else. It’s almost like I am building a paper trail as I learn. I’ve decided to invest my time into this and with practice you only get better.
Truth is we can’t learn everything about everything, it just don’t work like that. Eventually you become overwhelmed and buried in a list of to-do notes. Or you get lost in the rabbit hole and can’t find your way out. When I first researched how to make money online, multiple ways came back. I didn’t know where to start. I was ready, I wanted to do it all, everything looked exciting.
I did just that, but blindsided! I read articles and watched YouTube videos but I had no idea what some of the words meant. So it was difficult for me to understand everything thoroughly. I needed a list of basic key terms.

1. Keyword Research

What is keyword research? Keyword research is when people use keywords to research specific terms that people are entering into search engines.

2. Algorithm

What is an algorithm? An algorithm can be described as a list of rules to follow in order to solve a problem especially by a computer. It’s like the building blocks of computer software. Mainly used for data processing.

3. Info-graphic

What is an info-graphic? An info-graphic is a visual representation of information or data, people love visuals.

4. Back-links

What are back-links? Back-links are external links to your website and or blog, they come from other high quality blogs. Participate in guest post. I remember someone explaining it as – “back-links are Google’s reputation tool” – Yes, you want to gave a good reputation with google.

5. Insights

What are insights? Insights or analytics, I learned they are the same thing. Social media insights can be described as a report card of your social media performance. Rather its YouTube, Facebook or Twitter each social media platform have insights. Don’t get to caught up on the detailed definition. Spend more time focusing on using the report for growth.

6. Plug-ins

What is a plug-in? Plug-ins are literally like apps for your website. Simple!

7. Email Marketing

What is email marketing? “I wished I would have built an email list sooner” This is always one of the top answers when asked the question – what would you do different? Marketing through emails captures on your email list.

8. SEO

What is SEO? Search Engine Optimization. Huh? Yea, that’s exactly what I said when I first heard that. Basically it’s the practice of updating content to your website so that it will organically appear in a search engine – Like Google. Yahoo or Bing. Another term lots of bloggers say they wish they had invested more time in their earlier stages of blogging.

9. Monetize

What does monetize your content mean? Monetization seems like such a serious word, but basically it means the act of making money from your website and or YouTube channel. See affiliate marketing, ads, deep linking.

10. Landing Page or Squeeze

What is a landing page? Before I started my blog I always wondered what was link.tree? I wondered if I needed it. I didn’t know where to start. Then I learned a landing page is the page website visitors see when they first get to your site. I can insert all my links on my website’s landing (home page) page, so I didn’t need link.tree after all!

11. Google Analytics

What is google analytics? First off let me say if you are using JetPack, sign into your blog tonight and uninstall it. It slows down your site. Obviously everyone in the world knew that other than me. Okay, so this is your baby. One of the most important metrics for analyzing your online success. It’s your blogs progress report. I’m still learning it myself, but I spend most of my time in the behavior overview section. I change my date range to pull information for a 30 day range.

12. Domain Authority

What is domain authority? DA is based on three things: age, size and popularity of your site or blog. It predicts how well your site ranks on search engines. My site is new, so I have 0 domain authority. Stepping up my content will help increase my domain authority. I mean this takes time, but it’s good to know what it means.

13. HTML

What is HTML? It stands for hypertext markup language. To simplify, when text is entered into an HTML field on a website its translates text into image. It’s kinda neat. Just don’t change any of the text. Then you’re in trouble.
Of course there are way more terms out there, but I hear these select few all the time. When taking notes, I find myself writing down these words more than others. Pin it, share it, write these words down, do whatever you need to have them memorized. I’m hoping this can be used as a guide for you.

Hi Cheri! Thanks for this list! Yes, these are terms that I hear and write down ALL the time. I’m just a little over 2 months into my blog and I absolutely feel overwhelmed at times trying to learn everything and do everything right. One thing that has really helped me with WordPress is Meetup groups. It’s given me a place I can go and get some questions answered. Good luck to you!

I’m just starting my blog and had to learn most of these too. Especially long tail keywords. I just got my head fully wrapped around that today.

Wonderful post! I totally never thought of all the lingo that needs to be learned in this world. It feels like a lot on the beginning. Knowing these words is a big help, especially once you join groups and start networking with other bloggers! Nice job putting this together.

I’m so happy to hear this! Thanks so much. That was definitely my goal when putting this together. Experienced bloggers use these terms so much in their everyday speech. When I listen to podcast at work I hear these terms all the time.

Thanks for sharing this list of blogging related terms. I’m just starting the process of building an E-mail list. It seems overwhelming. I also don’t know much about SEO and I probably should’ve done more research before starting my blog. Instead, I jumped right in and focused more on writing posts and dabbled in affiliate marketing. Good luck and you’re right, there’s always something new to learn.
